Frequently Asked Questions: Coffee Brewing

How do I become a brewer in Singapore?

Those interested in becoming a professional coffee brewer in Singapore should consider undergoing training at one of Singapore’s many coffee academies. For example, we provide a coffee academy that not only takes you through the basics of becoming a brewer, but also provides a barista course which teaches you how to make the perfect espresso and basic latte art.

It seems like there are a lot of modules – where do I start? Which courses are suitable for beginners?

For beginners, we recommend starting with our beginner level modules like our Coffee Extraction Fundamentals, Coffee Tasting & Sensory Skills, or Specialty Coffee Theory. These are perfect for people with no prior coffee course experience, giving you strong fundamental knowledge essential when you proceed to the next step of your coffee brewing journey.

Which courses are suitable for me if I already have some knowledge and/or prior experience in coffee brewing, but wish to further my training in brewing skills?

If you already have some prior experience in coffee brewing, we can recommend you take our advanced courses: Advanced Extraction Techniques, Brewing Basics, Brewing Techniques. These courses take you through the more advanced stages of coffee brewing, allowing you to hone your artform with practical experience under the guidance of coffee professionals.

What should I wear to my coffee workshop?

We recommended our participants to wear comfortable, casual clothing that you wouldn’t mind getting a bit dirty with coffee grounds and milk froth. Closed toe shoes are also required for safety reasons. Any dangling jewelry on your person must be removed before each class so as to not interfere with your work.

Do I need to bring any coffee beans or coffee making equipment?

Nope! Everything is provided for you, from equipment to coffee materials such as coffee grounds, milk, and coffee beans. For a few modules, we’ll allow students to bring their own equipment so they can learn with familiar tools.

What is the difference between a brewer and a barista?

Generally, a brewer focuses on skills that revolve around a more manual coffee making process. This includes coffee techniques such as the pour-over, French press, and AeroPress. Although the skills are commonly found within the home brewing scene, a commercial brewer is involved in the presentation of the coffee through initiating conversation between brewer and customer, hence making it more of a secondary skill that is good to have, but not necessary in many coffee bars.

A barista, on the other hand, is someone who crafts espresso-based coffee drinks with an espresso machine. Think lattes, americanos, and cappuccinos! People who pursue our Barista course are usually interested in becoming a professional barista for a cafe.

Am I allowed to reschedule my classes?

Yes, you can reschedule up to 48 hours before your next class. This is done via the customer portal in your booking email. Please note that we require all participants to complete all individual modules within 30 days from the original date of booking to ensure that each student is able to retain their learning effectively and to keep our standards high.
