Frequently Asked Questions: Our Pottery Classes and Pottery Workshops

What do I need to bring and wear to the pottery workshop?

You do not need to bring and wear anything in particular to our pottery workshops.

We will provide all tools and materials for all guided classes. We’ll also provide you with aprons during your classes, but it’s best to come in clothes and shoes that you’re cool with getting a little clay-tastic. Just a friendly tip: keeping your nails short will help you dive into the clay fun more easily.

For open studio sessions ($12/hour), potters will have access to studio facilities and unlimited use of clay provided.

Alternatively, you can also purchase a new bag of clay of your own (Standard White Stone 10kg) at $30.

What is the difference between hand-building and wheel-throwing?

Hand building does not involve any machinery and is a simple pottery-making technique that involves crafting using hands, fingers and a few tools. Hand-building gives you more control over the clay, which allows you to create more complex shapes and designs based on your creativity and imagination. This results in hand-built pottery that are full of character. Learning hand-building is great for beginners to build their confidence with clay before throwing pottery on the wheel.

Wheel-throwing makes use of a pottery wheel to form and shape clay, producing handmade ceramic ware. The use of the wheel allows for pieces to come together quicker and results in professional and uniform-looking clay pieces, which can subsequently be added to or altered with hand-building techniques. It’s worth trying out both methods of pottery making as they complement each other well.

I’m interested in pottery but am not sure if I am ready to commit to a full course at this time – which workshops are suitable for me?

We recommend starting with our beginner classes, which will give you an introduction to the basics of clay arts and help you decide if pottery is something you may wish to pursue with longer courses.

The descriptions of our beginner classes are set out below:

I’m interested in joining an extended course to pick up and practise pottery skills. What courses are you currently running?

Extended, guided courses are a great way for participants who want a more comprehensive and immersive experience in pottery-making. With multiple guided sessions, you will be able to progress from basic to more advanced skills and have more time to practise and refine your technique.

You will also have the opportunity to get hands-on experience and learn the full pottery process, including glazing and firing.

Currently, we can comfortably accommodate groups of up to 10 for hand-building classes and up to 4 for wheel-throwing classes.

However, if you require a larger group size, simply let us know and we may be able to design something for you.

Reach out to us for a discussion on your desired date and group size so we can help create a fun pottery experience for your group.

Do you have pottery classes for kids?

Currently, our workshops are only available for participants aged 18 and above.

Only our Handbuilding Pottery Trial Class is suitable for children ages 7 and above.

  • All children under 13 must be accompanied by a parent/guardian.
  • All youth under 16 need to get their parent’s / guardian’s consent to attend the class.

With that said – We've also been exploring the possibility of offering a fun and creative pottery class designed exclusively for kids, where they can squish, shape, and sculpt their own masterpieces!
