FAQ

Which wheel throwing classes are suitable for me?

If you’re someone who wants to simply try out a trial class in ceramics and wheel throwing, we recommend our Wheel Throwing Taster Class, a 1.5 hour pottery trial lesson that gives you a taste of what you can expect when you enter the world of ceramics. It’s a practical class with introductions to the basic concepts and techniques to wheel throwing.

For someone looking for something more in-depth and is prepared for a longer time commitment, we recommend our 6-Week First Steps - Wheel Throwing Course, where we teach students absolutely everything you need to get started on the world of ceramics and clay. This includes classes on trimming, wedging, glazing, and even decorating.

Can I bring home my creations?

Yes! Students can bring home the ceramics that they have made during classes! Those in our Wheel Throwing Taster Class will be able to bring home one glaze-fired pottery piece, while students in our First Steps - Wheel Throwing Course can bring home up to six of their creations. Your completed pieces can be collected after 2-4 weeks.

Additional pieces can also be fired and glazed with an additional cost of $10.00 SGD per piece.

Is wheel throwing difficult?

Wheel throwing is arguably a difficult artform to learn, which is why there are so many workshops and classes surrounding the subject. Although it may look simple from the outside, anyone who’s ever tried it for the first time will let you know that the devil is in the details.

Every step of the process, from wedging to centering to throwing and ultimately glazing, requires so much attention to detail that it is very difficult to explain without actually trying it for yourself.

So don’t ever get discouraged if you feel like your first wheel throwing experience (or your second or even your third!) doesn’t come out the way you expect. There is a minimum amount of knowledge and experience you need to go through that is only possible through practical training. So try, try, and try again!

What is the difference between wheel throwing and hand building?

Wheel throwing is the use of a potter’s wheel in creating ceramics, shaping clay to become a vessel, bowl, or other inspired pieces. This allows you to create pieces that are more symmetrical and polished, but is considered a more difficult craft with a steep learning curve.

Handbuilding, on the other hand, is the creation of ceramics with clay formed by your own hands. Although the final pieces can look a bit rough, especially if it's your first time, their principles are easy to learn and you can craft a half-decent piece on your first try.

Hand building is also good for people who want to try out ceramics for the first time, as it gives you a lot of fundamental hands-on experience working with clay. Check out our Hand Building classes!

Will wheel throwing be messy?

Yes, wheel throwing will most likely be a messy experience as you’ll be working with water and clay, so it’s recommended that you come to class wearing comfortable, casual clothing you wouldn’t mind getting a bit dirty.

Am I allowed to reschedule my class?

Yes, you can reschedule up to 48 hours before your next class. This is done via the customer portal in your booking email. Maximum extension period for rescheduling is 30 days from the original date of booking. Strictly non-refundable in cash once the booking has been confirmed.

What if I need to cancel my class?

Our cancellation policy is as follows:

  • Cancellations made 7 days or more before the class: 100% sen credit.
  • Cancellations made within 7 days of the class: 50% sen credit.
  • Cancellations made within 48 hours of the class: No refunds.
