Frequently Asked Questions

How do coffee brewing techniques affect the taste of coffee?

Different brewing methods or techniques can affect the taste of your coffee. For example, your standard pour-over technique generally creates ‘cleaner’ tasting, brighter coffee, while an espresso extraction will result in strong coffee with a creamy texture.

In this course, we will be tasting coffee made with the coffee cupping method, a simple technique which just involves water and coffee in a small bowl. It is a popular way for coffee enthusiasts to test their coffee in a controlled and replicable manner.

What is the ratio for coffee cupping?

The Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) states the ratio for coffee cupping is  ‘8.25 g of coffee per 150 mL of vessel capacity’, or 1 gram of coffee to roughly every 18ml of water. You don’t have to follow this exactly, but through standardising your coffee cupping process you’ll be able to provide accurate feedback and analysis!

Does latte art affect the taste of coffee?

It actually does! A study in the British Food Journal found that coffee with latte art affected the participants’ tastebuds compared to coffee without. They found that it tasted sweeter and more acidic, with no real change in bitterness. But beyond taste alone, presentation is an important factor in the coffee tasting experience. Even a simple latte art can enhance the overall experience of your coffee.

Read up on our guide on how to create latte art, which includes milk frothing and espresso extraction tips.
